McDonalds promoting British farming for 2012 London Olympics

This article focuses on McDonald’s pairing up with the London Olympic Committee to promote food growth on British farms. McDonald’s, a global business, is a huge sponsor for the Olympic Games. Its famous golden arches are known throughout the world.

McDonald’s, “the fast-food chain is going to be used in the 2012 Olympic Games as a platform to launch its ‘McDonald’s Open Farm’ initiative where it will throw open its farm gates to the British public”. The local farms which supply the food and other food products to McDonald’s will open their farms to the public so people can actually see where McDonald’s foods come from. This will “showcase the quality of the food as well as the farms it comes from”. The reason why McDonald’s is doing this is to show the public awareness of where their food comes from as well as how they support the economy of the local farms. The farms are allowing the public to see how the food is grown and what their farms look like.

“McDonald’s sources 55 percent of all its food from 17,500 farms across Britain and Ireland and makes sure 100 percent of all beef, pork, eggs, and milk are local”. The fact that their food is grown locally is a ‘win-win’ situation. The farmers win by showing their farms and their quality products and McDonald’s wins by selling more food as people want to buy into and support their local community by purchasing their food at McDonald’s during the Olympics. McDonald’s will provide “14 million meals in just four week”, so it is important that the food is quality and easily accessible to them. When I first read this article, I was surprised at the quantity of food McDonald’s has to produce a day for the Olympics and how they are depending on local farms to provide them with the food they will need. McDonald’s is proud to support British agriculture during the Olympics. The golden arches will shine on the 2012 Summer Olympic Games in London.
